All four of the pixel images come from the vignettes for the characters that were displayed if the game demo was allowed to loop.
As for how we can tell...just showing our age I guess. I remember being in the arcade the night they rolled out the tester unit at my local Fun Factory. The demo at the time only had 6 playable characters and only one fatality for each of them, and only two or three stages. The buzz in the air was amazing, and the line to play it wrapped around the arcade. It was madness.
That said...this version of Baraka was far and away my favorite. I hope if and when SC gets to him, this is the version we get. No yellow cat eyes, no goofy underbite and fangs. As a 13 year old at the time, who loved horror films growing up, this version of the character, with his silver gumless teeth and deep, black, soulless eyes legitimately scared me, a fact made more scary when we finally learned the truth about Mileena. It was a look that I felt the designers played with and softened a bit too much over the years as he got more and more cartoony, which went along with his almost joke character/whipping boy persona that was fleshed out in later games.
