As Joe Moore stated, they don't even collect your money if the project doesn't reach its funding goal. When you back a project, you commit to paying the amount of whatever pledge you select, but you don't actually pay anything until the project ends and is funded. If it is not funded, no harm, no foul.

The goal does seem really high for a coffee table book, though a really, really big one. They do have 33 days to go, but Kickstarters tend to get most of their backers/money during the first few days and last few days of their timeline. Given that most people are just going to pledge for a single book at $50, they would need over 1,000 backers to reach their goal of $58K. I'm not sure there are that many people out there who will go for it, but I do hope it is funded.
