In the comics the main GotG were a single team of cosmic heroes that protect the universe from cosmic anomalies which threaten the fabric of reality rather than any people in particular, their ultimate goal is to prevent reality from tearing open into other realities as opposed to upholding any laws (alternatively the true original GotG team is from the far future of the 3000s and were a group of resistance fighters against the alien invaders that had conquered Earth). In the movie then the GotG are basically just a small collection of basically mercenaries with mostly good intentions that fight cosmic bad guys as they happen upon them. The Green Lantern Corps on the other hand is a peace keeping organization with an army of members that fight against evil-doers and criminals who act out of the law or threaten good things (like their code that they all love to repeat says). The Lantern Corps' Marvel equivalent would be the Nova Corps, the Novas even borrow the corps part of the name. Both factions act as a universe spanning police force that grant their officers super powers and both corps' main officers hail from Earth and received their positions from a dying alien member of the corps that passed the mantle onto them (Hal Jordan and Richard Rider respectively).
yeah, they are like cosmic guardians. the green lanterns are boring, i prefer the other lanterns like: red, yellow, white and indigo
