Harkening back to that classic line from Cyclops to Wolverine in Xmen "You would prefer yellow spandex?" Actually, I would. To me, comics are about fantasy and suspension of disbelief, so the effort to make costumes more realistic actually depresses me. I want my Captain America in flared gloves, pirate boots, and totally impractical little wings on his mask. Again, to quote Lt. Uhura: "This isn't reality, it's FANTASY!"
I always felt the same way - everything was heightened in comics, including what people wore (styles, colours, etc). I did see that would make them harder to translate to movies though, But Superman and Batman (1989) managed it quite well. Heck, I think the TV Hulk, Wonder Woman, Spiderman and Batman were good efforts. All that's really changed is the effects can show their powers now (even though CGI often looks fake).

I hated the 90's thing of comic characters growing stubble and wearing trenchcoats. Having said that... Captain America's costume was always one of the more silly ones. I think it was the 'A'... or maybe it was the little wings... Namor had little wings and green trunks... what was it with little wings?
