For my part, I like John Boyega as an actor, but agree that Finn's characterization needs work.
Before I clicked that, I assumed it was going to be about some of his lines, like "Droid please!" or the way he trash talked Phasma after they captured her. I don't see the slavery parallel with him being a Stormtrooper as necessarily being racist. It's not as if the movie is saying that it's right for people to be enslaved. It's just one of the many ways the First Order is shown to be oppressive to everyone in the galaxy. And the whole thing about his trying to save Rey is "chasing the white girl" and him almost getting killed sends the message that black men shouldn't be with white women is a pretty big stretch.
To me, it comes off as the article writer found one thing that might be accurate, but then tried to stretch it into more and more parallels just to make the article longer or to make the original point more damning.
Honestly, I never really got behind the notion that Jar Jar was meant to be an embodiment of black stereotypes either.
