I think some sellers definitely don't do their homework and look at what the market will bear…especially by checking the sold listings to see what price people are actually willing to pay. But there are also situations, where they may have listed the item at a time when there where no other competing listings (so they value the item at a premium), then when competitors come along and list, they charge less to grab sales.

With toys (and some other things) you also have KOs and Bootlegs which usually are priced much cheaper than the official. Some sellers don't make it very clear that they're selling KO's, so it can get tricky when comparing prices.

Then there are sellers (who are also collectors) that are trying to recoup the price they originally paid (sometimes aftermarket prices), even though that item may have dropped in value over time.

Finally, there are just sellers that are completely unrealistic or maybe aren't in a rush to sell, so they wait for a buyer that isn't doing their homework.

There are probably more possibilities, but those are off the top of my head.
