I picked up the good doctor today (the collectible store by me got them in yesterday). In-hand, it clearly IS the same sculpt as the preview pics. The difference is that of an in-house, hand-painted prototype vs. a mass-produced retail paintjob. No, it certainly does NOT look as good as the previews, but once you get Herb out of the packaging and get a closer look at the head sculpt, it looks A LOT better than the initial packaging shots made it out to be. The likeness of Jeffrey Combs is good, even with the slightly downgraded paintjob, as is the likeness of David Gale (Dr. Hill).
I had a whole case to choose from and the paint varied WILDLY from figure to figure, with lots of slop and random scratches on the face paint and hair. If you have the ability, I'd highly recommend buying this retail like I did so you can pick out a good one...overall, I'm quite satisfied with the paintjob on the one I got, but I had to dig through some bad ones to find it. Some of the figures had 5 o'clock shadow (why? West was always clean-shaven in the movies) that looked like it was applied by a spastic kindergartner with a magic marker.
But once I found a "good" one, I was happy. The figure's outfit is well-done (NECA's typical retro-style cheesiness), the articulation is great (again, typical of their retro figures), the joints very sturdy, and the accessories...holy geez. He's got everything a Herbert West figure could need. He comes with a syringe, a bottle of reagent, Rufus the cat, that plagiarist Dr. Hill's severed head, an autopsy tray, and the shovel West used to decapitate Dr. Hill. I didn't bother taking a pic of the shovel, because...well, it's a shovel, which is impossible to fuck up. But all the other accessories are in the pics below, and they kick ass.
Overall, Dr. West is a very good figure (provided you can hand-pick yours..if you're ordering from the web I feel kinda sorry for you) with an amazing assortment of accessories. Plus, it's fucking Re-Animator...for that reason alone it's a must-buy for any serious horror fan.
"West. Herbert West."
"Here you are, trysting with a bubble-headed co-ed."
"HE failed! Not I!"
"Wesssssst, youuuu basssstarrrrrdddd!"
"Cat dead. Details later."
