That Sauron does look pretty sweet. As an aside, I still find his choice of name odd from an in-universe perspective. I get the desire to be equated to the dark lord but Marvel's Sauron has almost nothing in common with his namesake. Why didn't he choose Smaug or Fell? My guess would be that prior to becoming a flying lizard-man, Sauron was a bit of a geek (or perhaps a hippie, given the time-period):



It’s worth noting, though, that in Tolkien’s mythos, Sauron, prior to losing his ability to change his shape as the result of his being “killed” during the Fall of Numenor, was known to take on the form of a giant bat when it suited him, so there’s your flying/winged creature connection.
