I can’t really recommend the wave given the QC issues I’m experiencing that may/may not be an isolated issue. However, I’m also glad that I purchased the wave as it marks an end to an era.
Nightwing is the best (most iconic) of the wave with much appreciated fist accessories along with griping hands, but I’m a little surprised at the lack of a harness for his fighting sticks. The faces of Starfire, Beast Boy and Flash are a bit too cartoonish for my tastes, but not deal-breakers. The paint app on my Green Lantern makes his fade look more like male pattern baldness and his ab-crunch has zero backwards play (a common occurrence with many DCUC figs) making it difficult to pose the corps ‘best flyer’ in an actual flying posture. The paint apps aren’t uniformly terrible, meaning that they can be individually satisfying. The issue is that many of the joints (across my case shipment) have been painted over requiring heat treatments and light exacto-blade surgeries. I can't tell whether or not this was the reason for the bicep peg tear on my Beast Boy, but the figs definitely feel rushed – weird because we’ve been waiting a while for these last Mattel wares to hit retail. If not for the joint tear and slightly silly face, Beast Boy would have been my pick for best fig given the uniquely sculpted details like fur and textured costume. But when you watch something you’ve anticipated nearly disintegrate in your hands, it leaves an impression.
All around, Mattel was definitely headed in the right direction. They had more QC and consumer satisfaction testing to do with some design elements; there’s no rhyme nor reason for why some characters have hinged wrists while others lack the feature etc. Had they the benefit of maybe two to three more waves, from what I’m seeing with this set, they would have had a line that could compete with Marvel Legends, for sure. Oh, well…life can be cruel.
