It's safe to say stores order a few hundred each, but we don't know the fandom preorders. If Super7 makes 12,000 the price would be better than if they only make 10,000, but maybe Super7 priced these conservatively at the numbers they KNOW they can hit. Also, Super 7 is a VERY small company, with a very small distribution footprint. They have a lot less ability to absorb costs. If you look at crowdfunded toy attempts, those are almost always substantially more than the popular brands at Walmart, because those, too, have to be made in smaller numbers and still make a profit for the designer.
I cannot fault Super7 for wanting to make money. The price isn't that bad. Good articulation, tons of accessories, good sculpt, they hired 4Horsemen (probably not cheap), and only $45-50 depending on where you order. I'd say that's a pretty good deal compared to Mezco One, where you pay 80+ for essentially the same plastic body over and over with different soft goods and accessories. All things considered, I'm perfectly good with buying Splinter. He fits close enough for the comics Splinter I'll never get from Neca. Time will tell if I go with anything else from Super7, but they definitely deserve respect for the attempt.
I'm definitely wondering about that 4 horsemen cost too. Those guys are like rockstars right? They are in my mind. That's gotta be a pretty penny.
It seems like the toy company would have a lot less to create with a property, like "Batman", because it brings to the table all this stuff. But turning the visuals into a 3D representation that works with sculpture and engineering, is a huge creative and mathematical feat. Super7's ultimates are somewhat in the technically advanced category. I'd like them to be on SHF level in that department. Maybe one day.
It's seems like a unique accumulation of costs.
And ONE12? HA! I can totally see some "unnecessary" inflation there. That's what happens when you are basically a monopoly right?
No disrespect to mezco. I really love a few of the pieces. Maybe I'm underestimating the fabrics and accessories costs. Like you said, can't fault them for charging if enough people are paying.
It's only a matter of time before soap studios and other guys grab a larger share. You can see it already starting to happen with the subtle integration of fabric accessories in the "all plastic" figure world.
