Agreed on that period, at the very least, seeming halcyonic. I was in college for nearly half of the 90's and took that period off from books for 'party and bullshit!' HAHA! Good times. Truth be told, Surfer wasn't much better, it was just the one book I stayed on top off while in school and he happens to be my favorite hero - along with Spidey.

AoA had good plotting, but the titular villain of the event failed to live up to my expectations of him. Apocalypse was enigmatic and weighty when set up in the earlier X-Factor series. By the time we got to AoA, he felt like your typical cardboard cut out despot surrounded by laughable cronies - well, with the exception of Nemesis/Holocaust whom I liked. I feel stories involving En Sabah Nur, both before and after, were more successful in portraying the character. Just my opinion.
