Many of the sites that cover horror films (such as bloodydisgusting.com) have covered the legal woes extensively...other film and pop culture sites such as screen rant, Looper, etc have also run coverage.

In the case of Freddy, there was a legal loophole that allowed the property to return the the Craven estate once 35 years passed from the original deal with New Line.

New Line was able to countersue if I remember correctly (it's been a while since I read the story,) and rather than drag the battle out for years through the courts, the Craven estate settled with New Line, opting to give them the rights to the character and films internationally, while they in turned retained the rights stateside.
