As I stated, it's old school 70s.And if you were around back then it was not obscure. That same decade gave us a little something called Star Wars. Plus my age bracket seems to have a bit more expendable income. Thus toy manufacturers want to reach those with deeper pockets, especially if they have licenses from properties from the 70s and prior.
