Rarity can be a vector that influences aftermarket prices, but anticipatory hopes of completing a team (or the actual realization) also raises resale value. Thunderball happens to be a combination of both scenarios. The character was a 'running change' (*rarity) with Piledriver back in 2012, then delivery of the full team came to fruition, with the Wrecker in 2013, and Bulldozer in 2015. Flash forward to the present and you get a ridiculously inflated price for Thunderball, while Bulldozer, the final installment, goes for super cheap.

Citizen V, Songbird, and Mach-1 (throw in Speed Demon & Blizzard to that mix just for shits and giggles) all draw pretty abysmal secondary rates. However, were a Jolt, Techno, Meteorite, and Atlas released? It's very likely that the original three would all see a jump in price should that become a reality, which it likely will given the existence of the others. I'd expect the same for New Warriors. Wash, rinse, and repeat.

Of course, popularity also factors into the equation, but all of the wherefores and whys are pretty predictable IMHO.
