Someone jumped me for saying this on TFW, one of the many reason I don't bother socializing over there.
But I think Hasbro could pull this off, if they spread out the cost over several waves. One or two figures per wave. People proved that they'd wait five years for a mystery combiner. They'd wait quite a while to complete a properly updated G1 combiner. And I think kids would be on board with it too.
Heck, they waited a year to complete the movie Arcee combiner. And that one was just three pieces. (Maybe not the best example since that one is the single worst combiner in history. And then they didn't even bother to acknowledge it exists.)
