We always shoulder the cost but indirectly. We pay the store that paid Hasbro. Hasbro will spend it's own money with the goal of getting it back and more.
When the store is bypassed though the cost of production goes up because they are producing way less units, then the amount Hasbro has to charge goes up.
Hasbro is a business and not a charity. These items are no essential for living so it's all a luxury. Charging low prices is not about looking out for us but finding an amount we are comfortable with paying.
The crowdfunding model isn't taking away money from smaller companies. If How is backing a crowdfund any different then making a preorder(that's made to order at that) is the case of a Haslab?
Product costs aren't low just because Hasbro is a big company. it's because they usually sell a ton of merch. Hasbro makes billions yeah, that again doesn't make production cheaper. They are not trying to be in the negative in these Haslabs nor make a $1 profit.
You are absolutely correct to not pay if the product vs price is not acceptable.
But understand what Hasbro is doing with the Haslabs isn't insane(or "Greedy") but I personally think they are making poor choices.
