It's a bit complicated to explain, but the last bit of the game had royally pissed me off when I first played through it. I got stuck at the boss fight with Adel where Rinoa is attached to her chest for like 2 months. I couldn't beat it so I had rage quit the game for about a month and then beat her when I came back. Following that, I was not thrilled with the final castle, losing all of my stuff and having to spend like 3 hours trying to get it all back, only for the final boss fight to take another 2 hours to beat. Once I beat VIII I was just burnt out so I sold both off both VII and VIII to pay for Parasite Eve II. Boy, was that a mistake.
I enjoyed VIII much more the second time around in 2007 and I think knowing what to expect out of the finale this time around helped. However, it still wouldn't be a top pic for me. Here are my FF rankings:
1. VI
2. IX
3. IV
4. VII
5. V
6. XII
7. II
8. I
9. VIII
10. III
11. X
12. XI
13. XIII
I am not an online gamer, so I couldn't figure XI out and quit after 2 hours but I would still try it again well before I ever give XIII another second of my life.
At some point I do want to give XV a try. My wife loved it, though, XVI looks to be a more traditional Final Fantasy game, which has me intrigued.
My own list mirrors yours pretty closely, though I only played through X (have X2; backlog's to big to actually get around to playing it), and I never actually played that far into 8- I just didn't like it. I also don't love 7 the way everyone does. 9 was goddamned brilliant. It had just enough of an essence of everything that came before mixed together in one perfect package that you'd think it'd be more highly regarded, but for some reason, it gets overlooked.
It's also worth mentioning that Mystic Quest gets no love, and I do understand why, but as a westerner in the early 90's, it was a lot of people's intro to RPGs. It'll always hold a spot on my own list for nostalgia's sake, warts and all.
