wellllllllll, we don’t know for sure whether Apu is off-limits. unless anybody from Disney’s licensing department or Super7 can confirm or refute. not collecting the line means I don’t have to trouble myself about that anyway.
cuz like I said earlier, I was always going to be of two minds about that situation. that I would be disappointed not to have one of the show’s core supporting characters but that I would be pretty tone-deaf to not understand why South Asian-Americans don’t see Apu as ideal representation. granted none of the characters on The Simpsons intend to be ‘ideal representation’, it is a show that specializes in broad characterizations and playing with stereotypes. but the dearth of South Asian-American representation in the 90’s (obviously it’s gotten better since) meant Apu became one of its most prominent pop culture figures and I’m sure many were not thrilled about that.
