My guess would be that anthropomorphic creatures are almost always going to be more toyetic than just a regular human type. And works well enough as it's own thing without any kind of cartoon,comic tie-in. So I would guess its an easier sell for a smaller company. Plus probably easier to fudge into other lines as well.
