I don't see why they couldn't also be more realistic about the toll age takes on him. Even so he did some pretty impressive stuff in X2 (Halting a crashing Blackbird effortlessly, for example) and X3, and even X1 despite the more limited FX budget. He really didn't have all that much opportunity for showing off his power in X1, but lifting all those police cars, guns and bullets and manipulating them all at the same time is pretty freaking impressive for the level of control if not the raw power.

Plus the movies tend to be more realistic/limited about Magneto's powers in general...he generally only manipulates metal, as opposed to the uber catch-all mega-powers he has in the comics that they just pseudoscience away as "Mastery of the entire electromagnetic spectrum."

He looks like he's struggling with the Submarine. Personally I'm just kinda psyched because it could easily be a shout-out to the Leningrad incident from the comics.
That make me feel a little better, but the Blackbird probably weighed a lot less than that sub (modern/advanced engineering and materials, designed for flight, etc), as did all of the cars, bullets and guns in X1. Having said that, the fact that it was crashing at the time is still impressive.

And I do think with age (in either continuity), Magneto would develop a very high level of control over his powers and be able to manipulate several smaller objects at the same time. But as you said, that's an example of control and not raw power.

Maybe it's more of a choice between one really big object or a lot of smaller objects, as opposed to specific power levels, training or technique.
