True. But there have probably been just as many extraterrestrial predictions proven as there have been terrestrial, and most likely they are what-if scenarios, fictional or both.

I think a lot of the frenzy surrounding 2012 is similar to what happened with the numberous listings about 1999 and 2000 that Nexodusrex provided.

A lot of the prophecies, predictions and postulations started agreeing on a general time frame (but not the scenarios). Others just took the date stated by one (potentially misunderstood) source and ran with it.

Personally, I don't think anyone should waste their time worrying about the end of the world, since you probably won't be alive long enough to care or even know it happened.
