DOTM is up to 8 besides cars and trucks through its first two waves (plane, helicoptor, VTOL, tank, ATV/Trike, snowmobile, spider tank, dune buggy).
The first few waves of G1 had a remarkable variety of alternate modes. It had a huge variety of supercars, three jets in the first few waves, expanding by several more soon after, insects, dinosaurs, futuristic vehicles, cassettes, a cassette player, and as lame as it is, a couple guns.

Also, DOTM is somewhat limited by the fact that most, if not all, of the toys have to be based in reality or near-future military tech. G1 never had that limitation because it was all fantasy-based. So no mechanical dinosaurs, insects, beasts or monsters unless that's the "robot" mode (i.e. Ravage and Laserbeak).
But even still, as I said which you chose not to acknowledge, this has no baring on off screen characters. They could just as easily have bumped Barricade or Mudflap to later in the year, and placed another jet or helicoptor, or tank. Or something else that breaks up the sea of darkly colored cars.

My point is you might want to have a little more patience and wait to see what else is coming down the pipe, especially with SDCC still to come. Also, check out Cyberverse Hatchet for some REAL variety. Peaugh even did a review of him last week and I'm looking forward to it.

In his review he basically says "This is the Ravage we should have gotten", and I agree.
Quite frankly, I honestly couldn't care less what peaugh says or does.
