I wouldn't go so far as to say it's ruining the character.
It's an Anime take on a popular Marvel Character. If anyone's watched Japanese Anime before, this series shouldn't be a big surprise. It's very true to the Anime Style of Japan, and reminds me a bit of Witchblade to be honest.
I think the source behind the letdown, and this is purely my own personal opinion, stems from the expectation that it would be classic Marvel storytelling with the advantage of Japanese style animation. Instead, you get Japanese style animation, with a Japanese Anime take on the character (skinny wolverine, overly dramatic poses and cheesy anime lines, even by Marvel standards).
I think this series is being unfairly judged against the myriad of Wolverine source material and his features in other animated cartoons and movies instead of against the genre in which it was meant to be representing.
If that isn't the case, then suffice it to say that Marvel characters just don't translate all that well into the Anime Genre.
But will it destroy the characters....?
