He wanted to showcase some the more emotional aspects of the character whereas the studio wanted to "dumb it down", for lack of a better term, for a more mainstream appeal. The studio had their way in the end, not Norton. They really wanted to make their money after the financial disappointment of the first Hulk film. Still, he is contractually obligated to appear in any future films if the studio wishes him to do so.

Concerning the Hulk vs. Avengers appearing in Hulk Vs. and Ultimate Avengers cartoons: I believe that the studio can still incorporate this into an Avengers movie since not everyone has seen any of the Marvel animated movies. I know the hardcore fans have seen them, plus others, but definitely not the mass numbers that go the theaters to watch movies. It would still be new to the majority of film goers.

And it has been officially confirmed that Sam Jackson has been signed to a NINE picture deal to appear as Nick Fury in Marvel films. Thats a whole lot of Fury. I'm sure thats just to cover their asses in the future and they don't actually have that many films planned yet, but you never know.
Yeah norton's signed. But the Hulk vs stuff I'm not sure if they'll tap as it's been done so many times. But it could go either way. It just seems that they don't want to repeat what has been done whether comic, series, or animated like. When you look at the various properties, while they do take influences from, they seem to make their own entity entirely.
That and with hulk's smile at the end, hints at he has more control now. With the addition of Doc Samson as betsy's other love interest, and the mutation of the leader, they have a wide array of hulk stuff to tap for himself or bleed overs.

The animated properties aren't movie related, but filmmakers don't want to make something that's already been made. Especially when the success of a property like this will drive the merchandising of all related material. So sure a 'few' have seen the ultimates movie now. But after live film, that few will become many. Similiarities are okay, but too much similiar and you get backlash. It's like Mandarin and Ironman. Huge focal point in the animated movie, subplot in the new live movies, to be used in IM3 or later and in the movies he'll be different than what they used in animated. This is also helped in being avoided by having origin movies for each. No need to re-do the origins in the team movie this way. Hulk being the only clear unknown wild card, which may be resolved in IM2 in some fashion (or maybe that's why thor was originally set to cameo in it?) We also need to see the advent of the vault, or hydra and aim for terrorist usage of these new beings. The vault since abomination wasn't killed. They've got a lot left to cover before they become anywhere near Ultimates animated film like.

And while I'd like to see Hulk vs the Heroes, the last comment on it I saw was that it would create confusion for the audience. Personally I think it depends on how the next 3 movies are set up for avengers at the end, like how hulk alluded to bruce in control at the end. So it both teases for the hero fight, and denies it at the same time, so it's fair game. But looking at it from a hollywood standpoint, it's a toughy to consider. They are approaching this in a more real world approach than previously. So I'd think they'd approach the heroes gathering as similiar. Maybe not more than 30 minutes of the film dedicated to the team wrangling in the hulk if even. And the rest with the door open to why do they exist. Why did fury feel the need to form a team of heroes? What urgent matter created their need? At most it looks like stark may be helping with hulkbuster stuff eventually for right now. Maybe even the implimentation of a hulkbuster suit. But we're talking about hulk here. So that fight is going to end no matter how you look at it, similiar to the ultimates usage, or he escapes after descimating the team. As much as it would work, it also causes too much similiarities to be original at all. I'd like to give them more credit than that with what it seems like they've been planning. Especially after the plot threads in hulk, and comments on thor being mostly asgard. And covering both sides of cap from half in the 40s, and half present day time lost soldier. We've got all these threads interweaving into just hulk vs the heroes, doesn't really seem like a hollywood approach, cept maybe for the first half hour of the film. While Loki could work too, I'm not sure how much of thor is present day to set it up. Ultron has the issue of needing to be created at the end of Antman's film.
Kang could work since he'd be coming to the time that the avengers formed or had their first real documented mission. Hydra and Aim are where I think they may go. As they seem like the only area of the marvel Universe left open with Modok and such, even a cap paralleling past. It'd also explain the need of a new heavy duty Superheroes shield team. If more organizations are making 'super soldiers' especially after the abomination's publicity. They really have too much canon already built up to take easy outs like Loki, or the ultimate fallback, hulk. We need something that'd prove to be a threat to the heroes. Something with legion, and or incredible odds. Moreso than just one force of nature, or trickster god. Like I could see aim trying to kidnap banner to test their new MODOG project, but then the avengers are called in when bruce hulks out leading to them containing him while aim gets away, leaving a bigger puzzle for a better big bad as MODOG takes over aim etc. That's just one excuse for epic fight, info gathering, and then nonstop super being fights. (AIM super soldier villian cameos galore too).

I don't know, I just expect something a little more intricate with the why's, since fury has been recruiting people. But at the same time, we need a big bad that can deal with or on par with the hulk, and a thunder god. So even outside of those two bashing each other, we need more than just a trickster god. Personally I'd love to see the use of the kree, if just to set up Ms. marvel later. But they could also set up vibranium for caps shield as the black panther usage down the road too. They've got lots of room and material to tap without going near anything already done, I'd like to see what they come up with as a new approach. We need more original unrecycled super hero movies and shows.

Movies like these create demand for more material. So the animated films will boom during this transitional time which is an added reason as to not imitate anything already done while still being faithful. Use the norton hulk film as an example, while it alluded to previous usages, it was an entirely new approach while still paying respects to the previous incarnations like ferigno's cameo, the bixby music etc. Something on that order is what I expect from avengers. New and different while still mainaining nostalgia and real world accuracy to what if this was our world. Loki and Hulk seem too much like an unknown for it to be the cause of fury trying to form a team too. Them forming is forethought, a loki hulk attack is random. Now abomination being incarcerated, does start to explain why a team is needed in case beings like him escape, but considering he's the only known one in existence besides hulk. What else is there?

IM (fury)-> Hulk (stark)-> IM2(thor) -> Thor (cap allegedly but unknown honestly)-> Cap(unknown) -> Avengers(unknown).

Now all those are near the end cameo's or after credits. We already know Fury is in more than a credit like scene for IM2.

As for fury's 9 picture deal, that covers IM2, Cap, thor, Avengers, and any subsequent use like IM3, Cap2 (if they make one), Thor 2 (if they make one), hulk 2(if they make one) and avengers 2(if they make one), it's also rumored they might do a fury stand alone film, and unless they use all his uses up through sequels, the antman movie too. To be honest, cap and thor don't need sequels from the shape of things, though maybe. Depends how much of thor cameos in IM2 or if that's changed since. Avengers 2 is a lock more than likely. Hulk's slightly different with all the remaining threads they intentionally left, Ironman 3 is a given, and Ant-man is going to be, well, different.

Then he'll need to be re-signed again.

Personally if it was me, I'd save Mandarin for Avengers 2 as a bleed over from IM3 into an avengers hands of the mandarin film. I'd also use hulk 2, and Avengers as the stage setter for an armor wars ironman 3. Titanium Man, Crimson Dynamo, and more.
The order of the 10 rings is a good stage setter for a super villian terrorist organization that could branch out from or to aim and hydra, and others.
