Wolverine this, wolverine that. Wolverine starring in like four-six monthly team titles, two solo books, whatever mini series is going on, and guest starring in at least four different books a month. Then gets headlined OVER the X-men in the Wolverine AND The X-Men cartoon, and given control of the team when there are half a dozen other, better leaders underneath him (Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Frost).
Two million toys exist of him, when we have trouble getting other alpha characters who actually may be more important to the marvel universe (And this goes back to the pre ML Toybiz days).
And because Wolverine can't be in enough places, they clone him and make a cute little girl Wolverine (That's disturbing on sooooooooo many levels), and because Sabertooth being the "evil" wolverine schtick wasn't enough, they make Dark Wolverine, too.
I won't deny that Batman is the DC equivalent. (Green Arrow would sooooo rock an animated series, if they would stop plugging Batman, and give someone ELSE a chance!)
But, that's more or less what I'm talking about when I say Wolverine doesn't deserve the popularity he gets. Over exposure to insane levels by the publishers and other companies handling the marvel franchises. (And I'm not saying Batman isn't. He's a whole different can of worms) In the real world, he's not as insanely popular as the companies think he is. Popular yes, but from what I pick up even from his most diehard fans is they'd like to see him get scaled back, too.
Wolverine's the best there is at what he does, and what he does is be everywhere.
Personal opinion, He was a lot cooler back in Giant Sized X-Men era, before he was overexposed. Better written, a more realistic character, and just all around better rounded.
Nowadays, his best scenes are when Molly Hayes beats the snot out of him.
Now that angle I can definitely see, and respect that perspective. I personally only read the Wolverine solo series and Uncanny X-Force these days and before that it was just whatever was part of Messiah Complex through 2nd Coming which only made sense to include him.
That's how I avoid the overexposure. By simply reading what interests me. I read the recent avengers stuff and it was silly for more reasons than just Wolverine, IMO (the recent series that focused on Kang coming back and the Hood getting the infinity gauntlet)
I will admit to enjoying the New Avengers series, which to me, was just a reason to include all the most popular Marvel Heroes on one team. DC's done it plenty of times, but hey business is business when you want to increase your unit market share in this industry.

The only thing I'll put Batman above Wolverine, is Batman is capable of screwing up, big time.
That's true. Batman and Robin was infinitely more terrible than XMO: Wolverine
But to be honest, Batman in his universe would be Illuminati level in terms of what hero's get consulted for world threatening dangers. Anyone in that position is going to be placed in a position of great potential to screw up big. So this isn't even a fair comparison.
Iron Man for example is that guy who, when he screws up, the world feels it. Batman and Brother Eye, Tower of Babel type stuff...C'mon Wolverine stabs things. You know that's not even a fair statement to make given the character attributes.
