The first X-men movie was ok. It certainly put together a great cast. But the story was merely alright - I'll never understand why they can't just mine the comics for a great story, or at least not go so far from the story so that it is almost unrecognizable.

X-men: The Last stand was really poorly done. Major characters die meaningless deaths. Tons of new characters are added with no sense of back story or depth. The whole of the movie seemed a waste.

But X2 ... now that was really well done. And it is why people forgive the first movie so easily. Much like Spider-Man 2, which had its flaws, it also elevated the story as well. Heck, you could say the same thing about Empire Strikes Back - without a great second movie in a series, the movies either are forced to reboot or be abandoned altogether (ie Hulk and Fantastic 4). (A notable exception - Transformers; but it made so much money, who could stop it?)

First Class was really well done - easily my favorite superhero movie of the summer. Its ONLY failing was trying to connect it to the earlier movies - a completely unnecessary action, and one that only hurt it in the end.
