A little late to this discussion, forgive me, but there is a common misconception to what a store has to legally sell you an item at: it's what rings up at the till/check-out. It's called an invitation to treat here in the UK or an Invitation to Bargain to my american counterparts. Basically, without all the legal jargon, it's to protect retailers from mistakingly pricing items at a lower price and under contract law a "binding contract" to sell the item only is formed when it is rung up; not before.
