I think it has a lot to do with which writers Marvel assigns to which books. You can really tell sometimes when a writer is fully behind a character or if he/she loathes the character. I seem to recall Clairmont having that kind of relationship with Wolverine, but I could be wrong. I know there was one X-writer who couldn't stand Logan and marginalised him every chance they got.

Definitely. Some writers also love characters but hate how they've been treated so they completely redo everything about them, history and all. Others never bother to read up on characters they use, and some just do as you said too.
