I think it's a bit different. I've only played MvC3 on the console, but the Vita version seems to allow for an easy mode. I think you can just hit a button and it will do a special move. I still need a little more time to tool around with it, only did one quick playthrough so far.

One thing I will mention, playing a frantic type of fighter like UMvC3 on a handheld is pretty darn difficult. It will either take a lot of getting used to, or I am just the type of person who likes it better on a big screen with a fight stick.
