That figure wasn't particularly ultra muscular. Venom is an odd case... Unlike Hulk or Juggernaut who is always big, or Spider-Man and Nightcrawler who are always thin and nimble, Venom and Anti-Venom really drastically change mass depending on the artist. McFarlane's Venom was a compact, solidly built body builder. Erik Larson tossed on the crazy fangs and enhanced the bulk. Bagley toned Venom down to a slightly more bulked version of Spider-Man, but far more of an athletic build rather than the power build.

Normally I have no problem with different interpretation of a character, but during a story arc (such as Maximum Carnage), having such drastic artistic changes got to be annoying, and was one of the reasons I stopped collecting comics in the 90's.

That being said, this could easy be made into Anti-Venom... I just looked at the first cover with anti-venom, and he wasn't particularly huge (perhaps still recovering from cancer treatment?)... maybe someone could do this version...
I was a little kid when Maximum Carnage came out. I actually remembered thinking it was pretty graphic and ultra-violent. Some of the characters were super scary. Anyway, yeah, the art on that definitely varied. Even as a kid, I knew some of the artwork on certain issues were somewhat lacking. Some of the worst art I'd ever seen came from this Fantastic Four comic I had that featured a long story about Submariner invading and looked like it was inked with ultra thick permanent marker.

This inconsistency seems to leak into the toy realm, especially with Marvel Legends. The sculpts are so different... a lot of times, in a bad way (in my opinion)... I think this design looks pretty good. It's when Marvel does it's signature move of putting heroes into street clothes that pisses me off. Oh, let's put Spiderman in a hoodie, let's put Dr. Strange in a trenchcoat. Let's leave everyone in their superhero costumes but give them all matching brown jackets. Let's put everyone in jeans and a T-shirt. At least in DC, only Superboy seems to do this look. Yeah, FF Spiderman looks pretty good.
