Here's my technique, but I'm sure there are variations so don't consider this the only way.

Conceptually what we want to do is weaken the glue holding the torso halves together and carefully separate them, retaining the peg integrity for reassembly.

I use the boil and crack method, you'll need a pot of boiling water (just barely boiling, not molten lava hot)

I also use a small 2 1/2 inch capacity bench vise, like this one:

I pad the jaws of the vise with a couple layers of old t-shirt cut into rectangles.
  • Start by dipping the entire figure in the hot water, for only like 45 seconds to a minute.
  • Remove the figure and pull off all the soft parts that will remove easily. Typically we are talking about the legs at the thigh swivel or hip joint, head, and arms at the bicep swivel.
  • Return the body carcass to the water and give it about two minutes soak this time.
  • Quickly take the body from the water and insert it into the vise so the jaws tighten against the ribs under the armpits.
  • Apply pressure with the vise slowly and carefully, you don't want jaw prints on the mold (the t-shirts will help here)
  • Don't try to crack the body in one shot, if it doesn't want to crack, don't force it.
  • Repeat that process as many times as need be (usually the torso will crack within 2-4 tries)
  • You will most likely hear an audible (but slight) crack sound, that's when you know your on the right track.
  • Once the torso has a big enough gap between the halves you can carefully separate the halves with a flat screwdriver inserted into an inconspicuous area.
  • If you do it properly, even the pegs that hold the body halves together will be intact, making reassembly a snap.
  • Take your time! This process cannot be rushed, and this isn't a race anyway, have fun!

There ya go!
