That was still very much the original transformers, the original cartoon, and the original toyline.
Generation 2 never had a true cartoon, Hotrod never had a toy, and was only a minor character in the comic, and was a direct continuation from the Marvel Transformers.

Picture if you will transformers one of the better episodes like the dam battle. Then follow that up with transformers episode with rodimus prime, and most of the regular transformers you were familiar with, suddenly gone.

It's bound to be jarring.

I used to get confused when I missed an episode of any story as a kid.
