wow, that is hilariously disappointing. even the prototypes have elbow articulation. and knees too? actually, willing to bet it's cuz there's 2 types of chitauri figures. one is a single card version which has elbows and knees, and the other is a vehicle version with limited articulation. since the figures on ebay don't come with the vehicle or weapons, i'd be willing to bet the sellers didn't know there was a difference. that or hasbro is having a laugh.
