The entity living inside the battery was a retcon due to Blackest Night/Brightest Day. During the original Parallax story arc (Emerald Twilight), none of that existed and the Oan Battery was just an artificial power source. And if I remember right, psycho Jordan drained it during his rampage.

The Guardians then put all their remaining power into Ganthet, thereby killing themselves and making Ganthet the sole remaining Guardian, who then found Kyle Rayner and gave him the only Power Ring left, making him the sole remaining Green Lantern. So...

Main power source offline/destroyed? Check.
All other Corps members either dead or de-powered? Check.
A newbie with little to no backstory or involvement with the Corps is now the sole member? Check.

Btw, and thanks for the summary regarding the recent events with Nova. All I've known up till now is his origin and the basics.

I'd have to agree with you. At that point, it's not catering to the fans, it's a half-assed excuse to cover up the fact that the writers fubar'd a bit of their own continuity and that this is only to get a boost from USM's version of Nova.

From a business standpoint, I completely understand the decision. But I have to say it wasn't the best way they could have handled the transition.
