As to the topic at hand, I generally keep the card backs for most figures, especially if they have bio or stats printed on them. Monetary value of the packaging means nothing to me when it comes to loose figures. The blister and plastic inserts get tossed almost right after opening.

I also keep the boxes for larger and more expensive toys (TF Masterpieces, convention/store exclusives and so on), as well as the Minimates packaging to act as an accessory holder. If it's generic packaging such as IM2 figures, then I throw all of it away.

Use a box cutter or a sharp knife and carefully cut the blister as close to the card back as you can to remove it cleanly without damaging the cardboard itself. If you only cut the blister on three sides (leaving one side intact), then you can potentially reuse it for storage later down the road.
