Yeah, but doesn't mean something from space can't "self destruct" this planet before it's time.
Well the funny thing on that, is context. "We knew it." Isn't accurate. It'd be as "they knew it." So odds are, it's something that doesn't even matter to the modern day.

As for 666, that's an injoke to the writers of the bible. It spells out a name.
This is also the marginally funny aspect to religeous prophecies. Lucifer does not exist. It was created in Dante's Inferno, and is never actually in the bible. Now Satan is biblical, but he's more often refered to as God's Angel of temptation. Satan even translates to 'the adversary.'

Religion and prophecies are interesting in this regard, but politics, and socialized preachings over the years have dilluted the direct meanings and context from history.

So 2012, as far as we knew could just mean the last gene traits of the Mayans, or Aztecs, or even just some social order change. "End of the world" is a complicated figurative term that covers so much more than just the actual end of the world. Think about Teens and how every little thing is the end of the world to them, and you start to get a vague feeling of exactly how far spread that phrase covers.
