Don't know what site you are using but ebay does still charge listing fees (at least $.50) except for I think if you do an auction starting at low price but it has to meet the requirements. I'm not going to list uncommon items for a low price and then sell it for nothing if I don't get bids after a short listing. I learned my lesson on that when I sold my Gundam figures as a lot (could have gotten $600-$700 more if I had done it right) and I wasn't going to just relist just because it didn't get as high as it should have. The buyer would have been rightfully pissed. This was back before they had BIN with options for offers. I had messages after the day after the auction closed from people offering me double etc.

I've sold unique items or lots of stuff that are basically one time only type of listings. You have to hold out for the best selling price and basically advertise what you have is out there by having a long listing. One could use shill bids but since I'm not going to do that so I start my auctions at a safe price or do BIN and allow people to make offers. I do hate how ebay made bidders anonymous so you can't spot sellers that use shills as easy as you used to be able to.
