The Hit Monkey wave is the first 2013 wave. The first wave of a year usually hits around the first of february when the post-christmas resets are done. Nothing really abnormal about the timing of it.

I would agree that the idea of running variants has always been a hit and miss proposition. I can't think of very many times where a running change went off without a hitch. I still think 50/50 case splits would have been preferable and more profitable to hasbro in the long run. But only if it's a 50/50 split down the line. You can't have a variant on the shortpack and have your double pack standard figure be the same from case to case. It leads to glut and peg statues. Having double packed big named characters is fine, but they have to have a variant if they are available. Wave one worked well on this with two steve rogers, two iron men, two ghost riders. The risky figures of Claw, Constrictor and Hope had no variant and that worked out well. The second wave had a cap without a variant and a spidey and wolvie who's variants took months to show. Those figures stuck around for a while and the Bucky Cap still sits on a lot of shelves when everything in the wave is gone.

The opening wave to a year is crucial for steady movement in waves the rest of the year. If you clog early, it's going to be a bad time.
