It's a lot like most "free to play" games nowadays. League of Legends is a prime example and one of the biggest online games in history. They are free. You can literally spend $0 and play forever. However, people will want outfits/skins, buffs, quicker access to heroes or abilities, and can pay to do so. The difference though, is unlike Playdom, you can still achieve everything. By spending cash every month you just get there quicker than others, but people playing for free will be able to access everything (other than cosmetic things - outfits/skins/fun things etc.) eventually. In League of Legends you have so much fun playing you typically want more champions and some cool looking skins so you drop some bucks here and there. Next thing you know, you've played for 3+ years like me and have spent hundreds.. but honestly... don't regret it!

The model really works when the game/product they deliver is super fun because people will want to spend money. Playdom forces you to.
