Review
Thought
Last Stand of the Wreckers #1
was a thrill ride? Hold on tight, because
Last Stand of the Wreckers #2
keeps the momentum and excitement going.
Whereas Issue #1 of
Last Stand of the Wreckers
primarily served to introduce the casual reader (or reintroduce to die-hard fans) to some unfamiliar faces, Issue #2 primarily serves to fill in the reader regarding the back stories on how our characters got to this point in the present. What happened to Overlord that made him an outcast among the Decepticons? How did Impactor escape Garrus-9 and find his way to the Decepticon dropship? Is there meaning behind the different pieces of robotic exosuit that Verity wears around the ship?
Nick Roche and James Roberts write the second issue much like the first. While not taking itself too seriously, there is still enough action to be satisfying. The comedic bits continue as well. Although most of the issue concerns itself with flashbacks and back story, the development at the end of the story literally puts the Wreckers in the middle of the action. Nick and James handled the countdown in a unique fashion, one that builds on the excitement leading to the ultimate, thrilling climax of the issue.
For those Verity Carlo fans, you’ll be happy to know that she’s more than just background filler. Whether the Wreckers planned it or not, she has a role to play in this series. There’s also a small shout-out to Jimmy Pink and Hunter O’Nion in the background. Speaking of shout-outs, there’s also a small cameo for Black Shadow. Want a more familiar character? Do cameos by Megatron and Sixshot do it for you? There’s something for everyone in this issue.
Nick Roche’s art is what you would expect from Nick. He tends to match the tone of the issue well and really provides his best stuff as the action picks up at the end of issue. The last page, a full-page panel, is simply exquisite.
Do what you need to do to pick up this issue. Low on cash? Work overtime, shovel snow or walk old ladies across a busy intersection for money. The issue is definitely worth the read. Given the ending of this issue, there’s nothing but purely, unadulterated action left over the final three issues.
