I always felt that Spidey should be similar to long-distance runners. Not super-skinny, but not Pro-Wrestler bulky either. This is mostly because he is supposed to be fairly strong, so it should show in his musculature. But he's also supposed to be hyper-flexible and agile, so he can't have too much mass.

But I agree it all depends on which version you grew up with when it comes to which one looks "right". Even the stylistic choices by the comic artists can affect things one way or another. Just look at how the mask's eyes are drawn, for example. It's the same kind of effect with the "ears" on Batman's cowl or Wolverine's mask.
