I think a lot of it is centered around standard military organization and that G.I.Joe is essentially a military-based toy line. A lot of sci-fi armies show some military influence, too.

My personal definition of army-building is when you have two or more of the same toy (or remolds, thereof), and the media associated with it usually shows that toy/character in groups instead of on its own. But there are usually variations within the media for specialists/commanders, so you don't necessarily have to reuse the exact same toy/mold.

For example, your Junkions and Parademons would certainly qualify for the first part, while your Orc/Troll army would qualify on the second part.

For this thread? No, as the OP said excluding Star Wars and Joes. In general? Definitely. Although calling them a troop or an army is giving them too much credit, I think. More like a clan or tribe.

Now your Sentinel army, OTOH....
