Revan was a powerful Sith Lord (and a former Jedi who disobeyed orders and led others to fight in the Mandalorian Wars) whose mind was wiped clean by the Jedi council and used as a tool to hunt down and stop his/her former apprentice-turned-Sith-Lord Darth Malak. You play as Revan during the entire game without really knowing it until the later half, if I remember correctly. You decide towards the end whether Revan turns on the Jedi Council or stays on the light side.
