For the second assortment of their IDW Comic pack-in Transformers Generations releases, Hasbro went with a pair of retooled / redecoed releases. One of the two was Hoist, a retooled Trailcutter featuring a new head and a crane in place of the truck bed cover / hatchback panel accessory Trailcutter sported. While a simple retool, it is very effective and also true to how the original Hoist was retooled from Generation 1 Trailbreaker.

Hoist's deco is quite simply, gorgeous. The green and orange contrast as well now as they did in 1985, and the updated design is very much in keeping with the "Classics" style of reimagined Generation 1 Autobots, while still being distinctly Hoist. The new head in particular I feel is very well done, with nice yellow eyes and faceplate evoking Hoist's unique look. The crane accessory folds up to become a small blaster for Hoist - unusually conservatively small among Transformers toys who have huge blasters. It's a different style of design though, which makes it nice and refreshing.

We've been waiting a long while for a new Hoist to add to our Classics shelves, and while the Revenge of the Fallen Hoist filled the space nicely in the interim, this toy is definitively the Classics Hoist in this fan's eyes. I enjoyed the Trailcutter toy a lot, but I would say Hoist, with his brighter and frankly more unique deco, is the more appealing of the two. If you can only get one, consider Hoist (if you can though, get both, they are both amazing toys and characters deserving of your time, and excellently designed little toys to boot).
