Review
The Nefarious mini-series will go down as a divisive mini-series. The mini-series will be fervently followed by fans of the movie-series, but skipped by most fans who dislike the movie series. The same can be said of the writer of the mini-series, long-time Transformers writer Simon Furman.

Transformers: Nefarious #2 takes place immediately following the events of the first issue. Following the battle at Kingdom Petrochemicals, National Security Advisor Theodore Galloway is prepared to deactivate N.E.S.T. Meanwhile, the soldiers and Autobots of N.E.S.T. begin to suspect another human entity is involved in the conflict and seek to determine the new entity’s motives. Soundwave continues to seek answers regarding how Ravage was revived. During all of the events of the day, the Initiative plots to recreate the AllSpark for its own purposes.

Simon Furman provides the typical Simon Furman performance. The issue has self-narration (this time, by Optimus Prime) and wordy dialogue. If you like Simon’s work in the past, this issue will feel like more of the same. Simon does, however, a great job of keeping in touch with the tone of the movies. Optimus Prime still has his bad-ass, drop from the sky moment, Sideswipe is still cocky, and Galloway still doesn’t like Transformers. And what’s a movie universe comic without death? The death toll in this issue is triple that of that first issue.

Art duties are again handled by Carlos Magno. His work in Issue #2 is a step back at times from that of Issue #1, although still a vast improvement of his work in Tales of the Fallen #1 through #4. During non-action scenes, Carlos’ lines and details are distinct but sometimes become more indistinct during the action scenes. Where Carlos truly shines are close-ups of the Transformers, which features intricate details of the robot surfaces. Kris Carter’s colors again contribute to the effectiveness of Carlos’ lines.

In order to be straight with the readers of this review, Nefarious #2 is truly a movie-verse comic. If you like following the events of the movie-verse, you’ll like Nefarious #2. It has a nice combination of dialogue, battle, and mystery and stays true to the movie characterizations of the characters. The end of the issue also teases that the mini-series is headed towards a big reveal and confrontation soon rather than later in the six-part mini-series.
