I'm not sure that was MIB posing as Walt when he appeared in front of Shannon, and then later Sayid as well. And I dont believe MIB needs the person to be dead in order to take their form, however the only example I have of this is Walt showing up in front of Locke, after Ben shot him. I'm curious if that affects him in some way.

This could relate back to the restoring fountain that dirtied too. So I'm thinking water may be some kind of factor. There's something about dead bodies though that were soulless that seems to be some kind of factor. Too much emphasis on Jack's dad, and locke's suicide. And we do know people who died on the island spirits are trapped on the island. I hope we do get an explanation of what unlocke is.
