Not sure if that counts as 'racist', considering the Japs at the time were killing millions of Chinese civilians for partially racial reasons, and they then did the same to many other races (including Caucasians) when they undertook expanding the 'Greater East Asian Prosperity Sphere'. So the racism is at least partly based on a justifiable distaste for actual actions the Japs were carrying out at the time.

Seriously; if anyone read Jim Shooters blog, he said that Hank was never meant to hit Janet. The story was ambiguously worded or something, and the artist put him back-handing her. Jim was shocked when he saw it. So in reality, as far as the writers of Avengers go - Hank didn't physically assault Janet.
