He's got an involved backstory - while Hellwarp is a complete new, non-homage character, there was a Hellscream in 1998's Beast Wars Second, who was a remold of Cybershark to represent an evolved version of that show's Starscream. Hellwarp is a similar concept - a recolored version of Generations Skybyte to represent a cyborg shark evolution of skywarp. To top it off, the mohawk head that using the Skybyte mold gives Skywarp just might be a reference to Transformers Armada Skywarp, who also had a fin on his head.
