Mar-Vell died showing that even super heroes can't escape cancer, bringing him back full-time would be a huge middle finger to the sobering message of his passing.

My biggest gripe with someone coming back from the dead is with Joss Whedon and the Astonishing X-men. I was SO PISSED when he brought Colossus back. Colossus had such a meaningful death. Saving his sister and curing the Legacy Virus for all mutants at the cost of his own life. Then he gets brought back in some half ass alien abduction story?? Between this and Whedons arc on Runaways, I had a bad Joss taste for a while.
