Horror in comics.... most of the first comics were classified "horror" (tales from the crypt and the like) even journey into mystery and tales of suspense were anthologies that contained horror stories. hell Groot's first appearance was as an "alien attacker" in a horror story. Tomb of Dracula had a pretty good run back in the day. The problem is that everything gets stale so fast that any regular villain is going to get played out within a few years max. The public shifted from Vampires a few years ago to zombies and I'm sure the next "it" thing to have a resurgence is right around the corner. You also need to take into account what kids are exposed to now days. scary videogames, horror movies on the computer and Netflix and network TV even having Horror based series like Sleepy Hollow. I think the days of sitting under the sheets with a flashlight reading slasher comics and peeing your underoos are over.
I'm pretty sure the very first comics were adventure stories, funnies, and the occasional noir detective story. Horror in comics wasn't until the fifties as a popular idea and died down until the '70s brought it back again.
